Project Description

The Sustainable Tourism Development Project (Phase 2) will support the development of sustainable tourism within the three aimags of western Mongolia, Bayan-Ulgii, Khovd, and Uvs.

The project will have four outputs: (i) inclusive planning and capacity for local tourism businesses enhanced; (ii) enabling infrastructure for tourism constructed; (iii) sanitation and waste management improved; and (iv) management of cultural heritage sites and protected areas strengthened. These outputs will result in the following project outcome: sustainability and inclusiveness of ecotourism in western Mongolia is increased.


Services Provided by NAREE

NAREE provided the transaction technical assistance (TRTA) to prepare the loan project, undertaking due diligence in technical, safeguards, economic and financial, and poverty and socials. Detailed tasks conducted by NAREE during the TRTA includes the followings:

  • Baseline study and sector assessment

  • Prepare the Western Mongolia Tourism Master Plan

  • Preliminary engineering designs of 2 tourist complexes and 2 tourist streets

  • Improve the protected areas’ small facilities in 3 project aimags

  • Economic and financial due diligence and risk assessments of the EA/IA

  • Safeguards due diligence, including survey andfield study, environmental, social and resettlement assessment, relevant actionplan and review framework development

  • Risk management planning, especially for COVID-19 response

  • Investment plan and procurement plan preparation

  • Institutional capacity building

  • Loan project documents preparation and loan negotiation facilitating
